Oedipus The Rex

It was a tragic story about a hero who is trap between what is true and false. This is the example of typical story in period of Greece where religion is their way of life. A prophecy is one of their guidance to make their life meaningful so that no one would regret in the future. However, every cloud has silver lining. Though we can predict our future we cannot escape from fate that has been fixed by God. In this play, Iocaste received his punishment when she avoids taking care of Oedipus after his born as it was said to bring bad luck for the family. In turn, she does not realize that she has married to her own son.
I really enjoyed reading this story. Oedipus who is a very excellent ruler succumb to suffer at the end was in fact touching my feelings. Sacrificing his own position, wealth and dignity to whom who should deserved it is a great achievement that he can do in a way to be perfect in life. Well, this is very remarkable play and I may not be patience to continue reading on our next play soon…as my interest in learning drama keep blooming, day by day…

What makes me amazed about the ancient play?

If we look back during Greek and Roman Era, the play centres on religion, violent and life. When other entertainment is unavailable, theater plays a significant role for human to enjoy life. However, on that conservative period, woman is regard as insignificant. Thus, man carries the role as woman on stage. They need to play it whole-heartedly and it was really amazing when they had been label as the better “actress” than women. Secondly, it keeps me wondering on how man could come out with a great idea on that day when they just regard life just as an unimportant. On those days, people live in existentialist life where day in and day out they all just do the same thing. When there were tested, they just overcome it without much worries. Hence, how come man can come out with that idea just to be performed on stage? Only man with highly-creativity would be able to produce with such interesting play. In brief, a play really colours the nature of arts.

First Lesson in Drama

Earlier, we were introduced drama as the prescribed text on our programme but now we had to learn it in more details on the subject “Teaching the Language of Drama.” Here, we learn about the history of theatre which consists of drama development from Greek, Roman, and Medieval to 20th Century. I knew that I had come across to this topic before but it seems that I just take it for granted as it is not so important. Only now, I think I would have to put some interest on this subject because I find that the introduction of drama history really bring me additional insight on how, when and why drama should be performed on that period. Hopefully, this subject would provide me with a good idea on how drama been performed and how it relates to the hidden message that they are trying to convey direct from the stage.
